A powerful geomagnetic storm lit up skies across Minnesota this week, creating one of the most vivid Northern Lights displays the state has seen in years. The storm- triggered by strong solar flares-pushed the aurora much farther south than usual, making it visible across the Twin Cities metro and surrounding suburbs.

Thousands of Minnesotans stepped outside late Wednesday and Thursday night, sharing photos and videos of bright greens, reds, and purples dancing across the sky. Social media in the metro is flooded with posts from Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove, Eagan, and even inner-city neighborhoods where the aurora is rarely visible due to light pollution.

Clear skies helped many catch the show, and weather officials said geomagnetic activity remained high enough for Minnesotans to enjoy another night of viewing

Why it matters:
This was a rare event for Minnesotans, especially those in the metro, where the Northern Lights are usually faint or not visible at all. The storm created a shared, city-wide moment of excitement and connection, drawing thousands outdoors to witness a natural phenomenon that only appears a few times in a decade at this latitude.
